Mikael Waske, natural stones from Finland

The story of this stone set started in early fall 2018. A girl on a school nature trip noticed a unique stone on the ground. Curious, she picked it up. When the stone was examined in more detail at home, it was found that it had extraordinary abrasive properties in addition to its stunning appearance. At the outset, it was noticed that the stone was not as rough as it was traditionally seen in Finland. The finding turned out to be phyllite. Such a fine quality grindstone is rare, so the discovery can already be classified as a real lottery win.

Enthusiastic about the discovery, the next item was the archives of the Geological Survey of Finland with the question “What makes a stone a good grindstone”? The focus was on Japan, the promised land of fine natural stone JNAT.

WaskeWhen the sack was full of information, we started to fill the backpack with new stones—returned to the place where the girl found the grindstone. The rocks were turned, kicked, examined, and grind.

Six months later, appeared assistance; a place was discovered from which, in ancient times, slate had reportedly been lifted out for sharpening. In his childhood, the old gentleman said that the cows had been watered by a pit previously operated as some “mine.”

A few hundred meters from this place, loose rock was found. Samples taken from it revealed the truth; here it was. Whetstone.

After many stages of which a finished product was created, a production process was started: A very rare and hard Finnish natural abrasive stone of fine quality.

Finnish natural grindstones quarried and handcrafted by Mikael Waske are homogeneous, hard, slippery in grinding, and at their best over 30K. Such high-quality roughness is a unique property of Waske's grindstone. Such a hard and fine stone is a rarity in the world. Each grindstone is its unique individual, made with professionalism and love, respecting the material and traditions.
